After months of industry speculation, and a near deal with Sony Pictures, DreamWorks Animation SKG has signed a distribution agreement with 20th Century Fox, reports Deadline Hollywood.
The new deal was precipitated by the expiration this fall of DreamWorks' longtime pact with Paramount Pictures.
To quell investor fears, which have driven DWA stock to record lows, CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg had 'promised analysts that DreamWorks would have a new deal by Labor Day'.
Last month, the Los Angeles Times reported that DreamWorks had decided against distributing their own films.
The first film covered by the deal will be prehistoric/caveman comedy The Croods (written and co-directed by Chris Sanders), opening March 22, 2013.

Well, I'm happy they didn't sign the deal with Sony, because if they had, I think maybe Sony would've wanted to ditch Aardman for their poor performances at the Box Office, even though their movies are awesome.
On the other hand, I hate the idea of The Croods. Sounds like they heard Pixar was making a movie about dinosaurs and they rushed off to work on something similar. Though Chris Sanders' reputation makes me back off a little bit on this little assumption of mine.
A little Wikipedia research tells me this movie has been in production since 2005, back when Aardman had a five-film deal with DreamWorks. It was going to be a stop-motion film. So I'm taking back what I said earlier.
But I'm still more hyped about The Good Dinosaur than The Croods... bleh!
Wonder who Paramount will tap now to replace DW, can't really play with the big boys without some form of animation studio you own or distribute for and Fox now has two.
Paramount is investing in its own animation division.
What does this mean to Blue Sky Animations?
Blue Sky (owned by 20th Century Fox) will have to compete with DWA for Fox's best release dates, but other than that it shouldn't affect them.
Ice Age 5: Revenge Of The Kung Fu Panda
Mike, does this mean anything for a cloudy with a chance of meatballs 2?
No, that's from Columbia Pictures/Sony Pictures Animation.
Oh ok, thanks. What do you thnk of that movie? You were still The Pixar Blog when that came out...
That was one I missed. I'll have to see it before the sequel comes out!
Haha, I hope a sequel comes out! It is one of the only non pixar animated movies I like, that and HTTYD. It was (in my opinion)!as. Lever for the adults as it was for the little kids.
