Cars Spinoff Planes Getting Theatrical Release
Breaking News: Planes, DisneyToon Studios' spinoff of Pixar's Cars franchise will be getting a theatrical release on August 9, 2013, instead of going direct-to-video as previously announced.
Planes was originally slated for release in Spring 2013, then moved to Fall 2013. It's been about a year and a half since Disney released the teaser (embedded above), so expect to see a new one soon.
The film, featuring the voices of Jon Cryer and Brad Garrett, follows "Dusty, a small town dreamer who longs to enter the most epic around-the-world air race, despite his fear of heights."

Seems like a given that it'd get a theatrical release so when it was first announced as a DTV release it kinda surprised me Still, nice to se DisneyToon get a film to theatres once in a while.
I'm glad the trailer specifies it's Disney's Planes, because I don't see it becoming a critical success.
Pixar's already received enough criticism for overusing the Cars franchise to be blamed for something Disney's producing.
However, Disney has been raising the bar lately, which may mean that they're too confident of the film's quality. Either that or they just want to sell toy planes.
I don't see this working out with critics and audiences. Since it was made for direct to video, it's going to look that way to critics and audiences.
@Chris: It won't work out, DisneyToon films are generally not well received when they do get a film which gets a theatrical release. Alex is right though, it's a cash-in but we knew that anyway and yes, Pixar will get some flack for this Cars over-reliance due to it being Lasseter's pet franchise though nobody else is all that enthused unless they're younger than 12 and a boy.
Oh joy to the world! Just what our theatres need, more films from the Cars universe. Someone commenting on this topic at Cartoon Brew pointed out that while in 2013, Japanese audiences would get a thoughtful animated movie about the designer of the Zero Fighter, North Americans will be getting this...piece of work.
@ Nini I actually thought Cars 2 was better than the original because it was more entertaining. It definitely had it flaws but I saw Cars 2 as Lasseters take on the spy genre. With that said however, I only see planes as a cash grab that thankfully, Pixar had nothing to do with or else it would ruin their credibility. It's like someone said, " Hey, you want to know what would be better than eyes on a car? Eyes on a plane." What's next, Boats, Trains? Had planes been pitched at circle 7 in 2005, Lasseter would have dismissed it outright. I hate to say this but Planes exists just to make money. Story sounds generic and visually a will probably suffer compared to other, made for theatrical animated films.
There already are eyes on the train in Cars 2, and I'm pretty sure there were boats in the background too...
You know that Jon Cryer has left the project, right?
Toy Story 2 was set to be direct to video and then sent to theaters and look how that turned out.
Tyler: It's been rumored, but not official yet. That's his voice in the trailer.
@Mike: But this trailer was released a year ago. It's possible it was done before any voice was recorded for the actual film ?
Anonymous: Toy Story 2 was also made by pixar, not some other studio. It also wasn't coming off a critical dud.
@any. 12/27 12:48 am: Toy story 2 was reworked heavily for theatrical release. Planes, other than a new voice cast, is being sent out as it was for DVD release. The results for past films like jungle book 2 are not favorable.
So they're talking planes? What kind of crack is Michael Mouse smoking these days?
There better not be a volleyball scene.
Looks like another fantastic movie to look forward to taking the kids to!!
Insider news: That's not all Folks!
They're coming up with Planes 2 and 3 too.
God help us!
